Ratho Surgery – Notice to Patients from NHS Lothian

Ratho Surgery Update (13/05/2016)

Unfortunately, Dr Simpson remains unwell and will be absent from the practice for a further month.  The Health and Social Care partnership are keeping in regular contact with Dr Simpson and will share any information about his return as soon as we have it.

We hope that you can appreciate that for confidentiality reasons we are unable to discuss in more details Dr Simpsons absence.

The medical sessions at the practice are covered by regular locums Dr David Maxwell and Dr Assif Ali, in addition Dr George Mackie works a regular Tuesday morning and Dr David Miranda a Friday afternoon.

We hope by limiting the number of locums we use will enable us to offer a better continuity of care. We also try to book a female locum when we can. If patient would prefer to be seen by a female GP, they should contact reception to enquire when we have one booked and we will do our best to offer an appointment.

As you will be aware we now have a permanent Practice Nurse Nikki Wraight, Nikki is part of a wider nursing team based at Wester Hailes Medical Centre but will spend the majority of her working week at Ratho Surgery.

As Ratho is an unusually small practice with only one practice nurse post we felt it important that Nikki is attached to a larger nursing team for professional accountability purposes and so she can be supported in her role at Ratho by a larger professional group.

Nikki currently has clinics running every morning from 8am – 1pm.  Some of her clinics and additional clinics may be covered by some of the other nurses from Wester Hailes from time to time, this is so we can use the skill mix of a larger team to offer a more extensive nursing service to the patients at Ratho.

New Build

All contracts are agreed and we await the final version of the specification from the developer to enable the legal agreement to be signed.​

Arrangements are in place for emergency cover and we would like to reassure you that if you have a medical problem that requires urgent attention you will have access through the practice to a medical professional.

 We expect the situation to change on a daily basis as medical cover may become available at short notice and we will aim to offer appointments to patients as soon as they become available.

The receptionists at the practice will be updated with any new information to pass onto you as it becomes available.

The City of Edinburgh Council are reviewing the supported bus services and are looking for your views. Please complete their bus survey (Word document) and return it to info@radcc.com or leave a paper copy in the library.    Paper copies are available from the Library.   Please return all your views by 19 February 2016.

Security Advice

In view of an increased number of break-ins to steal cars in the west of Edinburgh Police Scotland has issued the following advice:

  • Many opportunistic thieves do not have to break in to homes at all, as a door or window may have been left open or unlocked. Always ensure they are secure.
  • Don’t leave keys on the inside of door locks, under mats or elsewhere that they can be easily found.
  • Don’t put your name on keyrings because if lost or stolen, the opportunist will have all the information he needs to direct him to your home.
  • Don’t keep house keys and car keys on the same key ring.
  • Don’t leave valuables in sight of windows.
  • If you have a wall calendar, avoid mounting it near a window from where appointments can potentially be seen – this could indicate when your house will be empty.
  • Mark your possessions with a UV marker. You can use the marker to record your postcode and house number on items such as mobile phones, cameras, laptops and tablets. UV Kits are available on a number of well-known websites and can be purchased for under £10.00. If the unthinkable happens and you are the victim of this type of crime then your property may be easier to identify if it has been security marked.
    Make your house look occupied at all times.
  • Make sure your motor car is secure, preferably garaged if possible and store the car keys out of sight.

Planning Application

At our public meeting about the planning application for 150 residential units near Freelands Farm we were asked to make available on our website the summary of objections so that residents could use some of these as a basis for submitting their concerns.   This is available here .   The document contains information on how to submit comments.    You are asked to put submissions in your own words, and if you are making an objection you should clearly state this.

Planning Application 15/05224/PPP for 150 residential units on land 164 Metres South Of Freelands Farm, Freelands Road, Ratho.    The Community Council is holding a public meeting in Ratho Community Centre on Thursday 17th December at 7pm to ascertain the views of residents and to outline how effective comments can be made to the City of Edinburgh Council Planning Service.

Christmas Lights in Ratho Village

The Community Council has been involved in fundraising for Christmas Lights.  There is only a short time left to buy raffle tickets in the library.

Ratho Bus Service

Following the public meeting with Cllr Lesley Hinds the Ratho and District Community Council have been in correspondence with Cllr Hinds and her assistants regarding the points raised at the meeting with minimal success.  We subsequently had a further meeting with them and alternative routes were proposed.  These, together with our outstanding points were dismissed and we were also referred to the report to the Transport and Environment Committee presented on 27 October 2015. An extract is attached below but in summary it states that there is no justification for any additional subsidy for the route to Ratho.

It does say that discussions continue – we will continue to pursue these.

Extract from report to to meeting to the Transport and Environment Committee:

At its meeting on 18 March 2014, following a report on Subsidised Bus Services – Ratho Village and Dumbiedykes, Committee agreed ‘that the Acting Director of Services for Communities report back once the new contract has been in place for six months to consider the need for a public transport link to the city centre and a future link to the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena’.  Discussions have taken place, and are continuing, with Community Council representatives, to identify an optimum service for Ratho which can be provided for the same or a lower price than the current service.

When there are budgetary pressures which may affect services in some areas, it is difficult to justify expanding them elsewhere, unless there is an overwhelming case for doing so.  It is considered that financing a direct bus service from Ratho to the city centre, and a future link to the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, is not such a case.

SESPlan Main Issues Report Consultation – 21 July to 30 September 2015

SESplan, the Strategic Development Planning Authority for South East Scotland, would like feedback on the Main Issues Report and wish to encourage everyone interested in shaping the future of the region to take the opportunity to take part in the consultation. The Local Development Plan for Edinburgh is then based on the SESPlan.

The Main Issues Report is the first stage in preparing a new Strategic Development Plan for the South East Scotland City Region (2017 -2037) which covers the council areas of City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, Scottish Borders, the southern half of Fife and West Lothian. The Main Issues Report is a planning document which covers issues such as the locations for growth, the number of houses needed, strategic infrastructure and the environment. It presents a series of issues and options and asks questions about how to meet current and future planning challenges.

There is a brief Questions and Answers summary here.   For an introduction to the Main Issues Report document, they have produced an Easy Read Guide which provides an overview to the key themes. The Main Issues Report and the Easy Read Guide are available on the SESplan website www.sesplan.gov.uk, in local libraries, planning authority receptions across the region and at the SESplan offices: Civic Centre, Howden South Road, Livingston, EH54 6FF. They have also produced a series of supporting documents including the Interim Environmental Report which can also be found on the SESplan website.

The consultation runs from 21 July to 30 September 2015 and they will be accepting representations through the SESplan Consultation Portal during this period. The portal can be accessed through the SESplan website.

They will be running a number of Community Council consultation events across the SESplan area and will send invites to these in the coming weeks. For the most up to date event list you can also check the SESplan website or contact them on the details below. The Community Council will advertise any meetings in our area in the usual way.
